Belt Ranking

Ranking in the Shotokan style is based upon skill level validated by periodic testing. Color belt levels and black belt levels are established within their own separate ranking system. Black belt martial artists utilize a Dan System while the Color belt practioners use the Kyu System.

Students start at the white belt -10th kyu (gup). Progression is determined by the practioners abilities in kihon (basic techniques), kumite (sparring), and kata.
